History

Liverpool Organic Brewery is a microbrewery based in Kirkdale, Liverpool. Established in 2008 we provide cask and bottled ales to pubs, bars, restaurants and beer drinkers across the UK.

Our brewery system has a maximum brewlength of 12.5 barrels and is electrically powered: The copper has twin 22.5 kw elements. We are highly energy efficient and use a plate heat exchanger to pre-heat brew liquor in the copper to fermenter transfer process.

In our first year the focus was on research and development. The micro-brewery was a singular success story within the real ale industry, we wanted to identify our local market. For someone establishing one from scratch, Liverpool is the ideal destination with an excellent range of freehouses along with passionate real ale drinkers. We began with 15 test ales. From that we have selected and developed a core range and seasonal brews including Best Bitter (4.2%), 24 Carat Gold (4.2%), Liverpool Pale Ale (4.0%) and William Roscoe (4.3%).

We began serving customers September 2009. Since then we regularly delivers casks and bottles to pubs, bars and restaurants throughout the North West. In 2010, Liverpool Organic Brewery added to its series of Heroes of Liverpool Ales, inspired by historical figures from Liverpool which began with William Roscoe one of early ones, 2010 and now includes Josephine Butler, Elderflower Ale at 4.5%,. Joseph Williamson Tunnale 4.0% and Kitty Wilkinson, a Chocolate and Vanilla Stout at 4.5% and Empire Ale at 5.3% to honour Captain Noel Chavasse.

In 2011, Liverpool Organic Brewery recreated Higsons Best Bitter. The city’s famous Higsons Brewery, founded in 1780 in Dale Street, closed in 1990. With the assistance of Stewart Thompson, the last brewery chemist at Higsons, now since retired, we worked with the original recipe to develop an ale as close as possible to the original taste. The “new” Higsons launched at the Liverpool Beer Festival.

This year, Liverpool Organic Brewery has also announced the acquisition of Merseyside based Cambrinus Craft. Prescot-based it is the oldest micro-brewery on Merseyside. John Aspinall, the brewery’s owner who launched it in the mid-1990s is retiring. We’re proud to be able to continue its strong name and identity.

The Waterloo Beer Festival was launched by the Liverpool Organic Brewery in July 2010. An opportunity to showcase a selection of ales to the general public as well as the beer trade in its first year over 1,000 attended. In the festival’s second outing in April 2011 over 2,000 attended and the event was a sell out on the Friday and Saturday. The Waterloo Beer Festival will return in 2012 with two events, one in the spring to coincide with Easter, the second in November for an autumn outing. In 2012 there will be an extended session on the Sunday from midday until 9.00pm which will include live jazz all day.

In 2011, for the first time Liverpool Organic Brewery sponsored the 17th Birkenhead Beer Festival held at the town’s Pacific Road Arts Centre.

2012 will see the first Liverpool Organic Brewery Open, a Four Ball Golf Competition.
